How can I get involved?

There are a number of ways to get involved and support SDI’s work:


  • You can donate via our Donate page or on any project page. We accept payment via credit card, EFT, SnapScan, and PayPal. Thank you for your contribution!
  • We are also grateful for donations in kind. Please let us know if you have a skill or resource you think would be useful to our federations.

What methods of payment do you accept for donations?

SDI accepts donations via the following payment methods:

  • All major credit cards, using PayPal;
  • SnapScan (only available for South African customers);
  • Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) / Direct deposit

How often can I donate?

You can donate as often as you like. We do not place a limit on the number of donations you can make.

Can I set up a monthly debit order for my donation?

Yes, just make sure you select the “Monthly Debit Order” option when making your donation.

If I donate, how will the money be spent?

All proceeds go to individual projects or a group of projects and are used to cover both project-related technical assistance and capital expenses. You can also donate to our operating expenses should you wish to do so.

Will I get a tax certificate upon receipt of my donation?

We provide tax certificates on request for donations of R3,300.00 (approx. US$240.00) or more. This can be an amount that was paid once off or over a 12 month period.

Do I need to create a profile or register before I can donate?

No. You are not required to register or create a profile before making a donation via our website.

Do I need to fund the entire project cost?

This is possible but not necessary. We will pool resources and raise funds from other sources if and when required. 

Will I be repaid?

No, your donation is in the form of a grant, which means it will not be paid back to you. Please contact us if you are interested in investing in a project for which there may be returns.

Who can get projects funded through SDI?

Projects conceptualised and implemented by SDI affiliates, namely federations of the urban poor supported by local NGOs, are eligible for funding through SDI. Federation members are the poorest of the poor: those who are most in need and yet do not have access to formal finance, despite a demonstrated capacity to plan and implement projects.

Besides financial support, does SDI provide any other type of support to projects?

SDI provides technical assistance and administrative support to Federations and support NGOs through action-based learning exchanges, training workshops, and direct support from the SDI Secretariat on project management and implementation.  

What are Implementing Partners?

Implementing partners are our partners on the ground- the federations and support NGOs who mobilise communities, undertake the profiling and enumeration and implement projects.

How does my donation reach the project implementer?

Your donation will be pooled with other resources in the Urban Poor Fund International (UPFI). Once the requisite funds have been acquired, the funds will be transferred into the accounts designated by the federation concerned. Depending on the nature of the project, funds may then be given directly to the savings group members or transferred into a project-specific bank account to which the savings group implementing the project are signatories.   

What happens if a project does not get fully funded via the website?

We will pool resources and raises resources from other sources if and when necessary.

What happens if a project stalls?

Reasonable effort is made to ensure that if a project stalls, for example as a result of delays in the planning approval process, it is unblocked and completed.

How can I keep track of the progress being made on the project(s) I support?

The project pages are updated regularly so you can check back in on the project page at any time. You can also sign up for our newsletter, which will send project updates directly to your mailbox.
