“You must hear this man’s story. He is very good at stopping the land grabbers” says Thomas, a National Slum Dwellers Federation leader, as he gestures toward Krishnappa. Like the rest of us, Krishnappa sits cross-legged on a colorful straw mat squishing the last of his daal and rice together with his fingers. The two visitors from abroad struggle with this technique, but the sari-clad members of Mahila Milan seated around the Bangalore office just smile and insist we have another helping. Krishnappa shakes his head and his eyes sparkle. “Will you tell me?” I ask.
